Making your very own DIY Carnival Costume!

Pirate Pullip!Anyone else excited about carnival as much as i am? Carnival’s something a bit big here in Malta, especially with the kids & teens. It’s a time for everyone to dress up as either their favorite character or else just look plan ridiculous and make someone smile along the way I myself am going to Gozo to attend the Nadur Carnival this year dolled up as something between a vampire-fairy being while my bf is going as the Grim Reaper (hopefully his costume will arrive in time through the mail!) … honestly, i’ve spent quite a bit for my costume (good thing i bought it a bit discounted off a Halloween Costumes website … or i would’ve spent much much more!) BUT i figured out it’s going to be an investment – i can wear the same dress next year with different accessories and have a totally new look!

But, the question is – what costumes can you create with either assembling things around the house or spending less than $20?

One costume i highly considered wearing was that of a mafia boss / gangsta- all you need is either a black suit or a vest (very in fashion at the moment) over some pinstripe or black pants, a trilby hat, a bright red rose brooch, and as accessories you can wear some cool black shades, a cigar and a fake gun Pirates and Gypsy costumes are uber easy to create as well if you’ve got bandannas, big white poofy shirts & boho skirts at home! If that doesn’t tickle your fancy you can always get your favourite tunic, wear tonnes of beads and go off as a hippy riffling through your parent’s old trunk of clothes might also help you to assemble a 70′s disco diva or an 80′s punk!

Goth-inspired costumes are easy to make if you’re into that stuff – you can recreate a sexy vampire, zombie or even an evil queen in seconds! If you study / have studied chemistry you can haul your labcoat on yourself, splash on some fake blood & you’ve got yourself a mad scientist or fix it up a bit by making it shorter and lacing the back & you’re a damn sexy candy striper (all you’d need it the hat of course! Don’t forget the syringe as well!)

If you’ve got a really pretty bath / night robe (preferably those really cute silk ones!) you don’t use you can always use it as a kimono in an oriental inspired costume – think geishas. With an old ball gown & a handmade banner you can go off as a pegeant queen, while if you’re totally uninspired you can go out in your pjs! Carnival’s a time where anything goes really

tip: one thing you DON’T do in carnival is wear clothes that reflect the lable that people have given you (you poor thing!) so if you’re into r’n'b & whatever don’t go out as a rapper (same applies to you metalheads & emos!) – Honestly, you’d just look like you do everyday but with added glam – instead why don’t you wear the opposite of what you normally do? Go off as a geek, a prep, a prude or just wear something that makes you look like you have a totally different different age group! NEVER wear racist costumes! No matter how much you’d like to wear as Osama Bin Laden, Bush, or some other character which might offend someone (ex. Hitler) just DON’T! You might spoil your evening’s whole fun!

So… what are YOU going / would like to wear for carnival??

We don’t have carnevals where you dress up here. I wish we did! It sounds like so much fun! Like a second halloween.

A vampire fairy being sounds really cute. I dressed up as a evil fairy this halloween. Are you wearing wings? Making your own wings is so much fun and you can do them exactly as you want. That’s another less than $20 outfit.

hey! So after a lot of kicking/air fist pumping, slamming shut my laptop and tossing it on my bed in a lovingly/angry manner, and a couple cigarettes later, I finally fixed what was wrong with my commenting system! LOL I made a mistake in my permalink structure! All it took was two boring little % thingies and voila! Good as new.
Anywho, about the wordpress on your phone dealy- how it works: you just install & activate the plug-in, and then from your phone (assuming you can browse the internet with your phone) you just go to your admin log on panel and check mark the “mobile” box and then log in as usual… the only difference is it’s not all fancy looking like the wp dashboard, but it’s still fully functional! Let me know if you use/like it! Here’s the link I got it from: http://wphoneplugin.org/

We don’t have carnivals here in Vietnam, but if we do. I’m going to go off as a drag queen looking dark. But geeky are just nice too. Maybe I’ll even end up having nobel award for biology, if they think enough.

Less than $20 outfit? Let me see… I can just take my long dress, put a couple of colours drag on to it and voila. Or if I want, i can just steal mom’s stuff. It’s FREE!

I’ve been looking through your 43 things. I think you did achieved one! It’s blogging more often. WOOO. *claps for Afef*

P.S: Did you received my letter? NO? I haven’t got your’s either. I’m making your birthday present. Hope you’ll like it.

That carnival sounds like fun! The only thing I’ve experienced that’s similar is Halloween…but once I stopped trick-or-treating I didn’t really dress up anymore because I had nowhere to go.

All those costumes sound cool. I don’t know what I’d go as. I tend to favor the spooky, medieval kind of costumes…nothing gory, with fake blood or anything, just something dark and a little eerie. Like vampires, dark fairies, etc. I’d probably dress up in something like that.

I really wanted to dress up either as Geisha from Obscure/Another Kyo cosplay/Wai lolita, but I didnt have the time nor the money to make it.

Also, a lot of my friends don’t really go full out with the dressing. They usually wear a costume that doesn’t need any painting of the face, while I LOVE to have my face painted <3
